Rock Case Study
Outcomes
After completing this exercise, students will be able to:
· Identify a rock as igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary
· Discuss what kind of rocks are common to his/her area.
Overview
In this assignment, you will begin by watching presentations on types of rocks. You will learn how rocks are formed. You will examine rocks and identify them by their characteristics.
Instructions
Take some rocks from the kit you’ve received. If you don’t have a rock collection or kit, start now. Find some different rock outside. This may require an adult to help you if you have to leave the yard. A landscaping business is often a good place to ask for rock samples.
Use the readings and videos to identify the rocks. Take a picture, make a video or sketch of the rock and your findings. Complete this for at least one igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock. Create a Word document, PowerPoint or other presentation model for your work.
